SHOWCASE: UNC GREENSBORO

The brand-new Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness, a colossal 216,000 square-foot facility, now stands to serve students, faculty, and alumni at the UNC Greensboro campus in North Carolina. Construction began in 2014 and has recently been completed, just in time for the start of the 2016 fall semester. The new wellness center boasts five group exercise rooms with over 50 classes offered per week, a rooftop patio for outdoor classes and events, a 54-foot climbing wall, and a multi-level fitness area with approximately 23,000 square feet of dedicated weight training and cardio space.

The opportunity to contribute to a new build with such an expansive floor plan doesn’t come around every day, so this project has been an outstanding experience for us – one of the best of 2016. The center’s architecture, interior design, landscaping, and lighting design were created by RDG Planning & Design.

Today, students, faculty, and alumni are able to take advantage of 80 networked Precor 800 Series cardio units (made even better with new P82 consoles), over 45 custom-upholstered Precor strength units, 4 Precor power racks, a 6-stack Precor multi-gym, a large Queenax frame and functional area, 18 Concept2 rowers, 36 Keiser M3i indoor cycles, custom UMAX dumbbells, barbells, and plates, and over 350 functional accessories, training items, and storage solutions from Escape Fitness.

The exemplary design of this facility as well as its close proximity to Precor’s North Carolina-based strength manufacturing plant made the new wellness center a perfect destination point for our guests at the most recent Discover Precor event. A group of over 15 multi-family executives and college recreation professionals from throughout the eastern U.S. were guided through the new facility by Ken Norris, the Associate Director of UNCG’s Department Recreation & Wellness, who was instrumental in the development and planning of the new wellness center.

Upon completion of this massive project, Norris reflected:

“When looking at what fitness equipment we wanted to put in our new facility here at UNC Greensboro, there were numerous factors we considered.  We wanted a vendor with not only a variety of products but also a history of quality equipment. The customer/vendor relationship was also very important. John Marcotte and his team at Advantage Sport & Fitness has stepped up to the plate and we feel very comfortable with having them as long term partners.”

Thank you to Ken and the incredible team at UNC Greensboro for this extraordinary opportunity!
